I doubt not the virtues of your mistress

But doubt your undue faith in her virtues.

Your confidence, not her reputation

Makes her virtuous, regardless of truth.

The one who suspects one’s mistress’ virtues

Makes her adulterous, regardless of truth,

And loses confidence to live with her.

Neither way is the mistress affected.
